Call Your Witness
...and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.
Text: John 8:12-20
Spiritual truth can’t be judged by the flesh.
Ronald Nash writes, "Every human being has a worldview, even though many are uninformed about what a worldview is and the power that worldviews have over the way we think and behave. A worldview is the total of answers people give to the most important questions in life."
In John 8, not only does Jesus proclaim Himself to be the Light of the World, He attaches this title to the second of seven "I Am" declarations. In declaring Himself to be the Light of the world, Jesus was claiming that He is the exclusive source of spiritual light. No other source of spiritual truth is available to mankind (Got Questions).
Only Jesus can give us a complete and coherent picture of the world. Jesus created us. And He is worthy. He is God. Jesus says, "All who follow me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Jesus is the light of life. He is our worldview. It is the only way to make sense of life. He is the only lens through which we can see life accurately.
The Pharisees objected to Jesus' declaration. They insisted that He needed at least two witnesses to substantiate His claim. Jesus tells them that only He and His Father are qualified to be witnesses. The Holy Spirit will be added as a qualified witness in chapters 14–16. And the Holy Spirit now serves as the internal witness to the believer that he/she is a child of God (Romans 8:16).
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:14-16, "The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him..." Truth and faith are gifts from God. Many people misunderstand faith, thinking it means you throw away your mind and just believe blindly. That is not what biblical faith is about (Sean McDowell). Biblical faith looks at the evidence. At the end of the day, spiritual truth can't be judged or even comprehended by the flesh. Jesus did not need any additional witnesses to His claims other than Himself and His Father. God does not need people to validate Him. He is self-validating. And He reveals Himself to only those whom He desires.
When you are struggling to make sense of the world or your current circumstances, you need to ask for the Holy Spirit's help. When life is going your way and the road is easy, you need to ask for the Holy Spirit's help. The flesh doesn't have the ultimate answers to anything. The flesh pursues the things of the flesh. The flesh can't comprehend the will of God. The flesh can have a lot of technical information about God but only God invites you to join Him in His work.
I hope you will take an hour this week and spend quality time reading, reflecting, praying, and journaling in Romans 8. For we are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12).
It's All About Jesus,
John
