Habit of Grace #1: Hearing God's Voice
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly... Colossians 3:16
God is speaking. Are you listening?

God is speaking! Let that sink in for a moment.

Go outside tonight and look up at the vast universe. Remind yourself that the stars you are seeing are hundreds of light-years away. Realize that there are as many as 400 million of these stars in our Milky Way galaxy, and the Milky Way galaxy is just one of an estimated 2 trillion galaxies! That's 2 trillion galaxies X 400 million stars!

But more impressive: God knows every one of the stars by name(Isaiah 40:25-26)! They were created by Him speaking them into existence!

God's greatness is awesome. He is immensely amazing and immeasurably powerful! Yet in His mercy, He has condescended to reveal Himself to us. This great Creator God has spoken!! "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke...by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son..."(Hebrews 1:1-2). And "all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness..."(2 Timothy 3:16-17)!

God is speaking to you through Jesus and through the Bible

Jesus is the fullest, most complete revelation of the Father possible since he shares the Father’s divine nature as the second member of the Trinity. Colossians 3:16 tells us: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..." It is probable that Paul is not referring here to the words that Jesus himself taught (as found in the Gospels), although they are obviously included. Instead, he has in view the whole package of teaching about Christ and all the deep and far-reaching implications of the gospel. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Not meagerly or momentarily. Don’t just sip; drink deep. Taste and savor our Savior!

We should read and study the Bible because it is God’s very Word to us. The Bible is literally "God-breathed"! It cannot be emphasized strongly enough just how important the Bible is to our lives. Studying the Bible can be compared to mining for gold. If we make little effort and merely "sift through the pebbles in a stream," we will only find a little gold dust. But the more we make an effort to really dig into it, the more reward we will gain for our effort (Got Questions).

Will you come to God in a posture of dependence and hear Him speak?

  • Preach Jesus to yourself at all times. Let Jesus speak.
  • Have a regular, daily time with God in His Word.
