Helping Each Other
In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. Ephesians 2:22
Ephesians 2 tells us God dwells in His people as His temple through Jesus and by the Holy Spirit. This most definitely isn’t about gathering under one roof once or twice a week. It is doing life together! Doing life together in community is a physical demonstration of the grace of God.
Every Christian receives the Holy Spirit at salvation. And we cannot ever lose the Spirit. But being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time act. In Scripture, we read of a relationship that calls us into an active pursuit of Spirit-filling. And as I said yesterday, comparing Ephesians 5:18-19 and Colossians 3:16, you are filled with the Spirit to the degree that Christ’s words abide in you. And the result of Spirit-filling transforms you into a person bursting with love and joy.
An authentic, gospel-driven community is a natural outgrowth of letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Authentic community requires the supernatural work of the Spirit because it requires continual self-denial. Being served is much more natural than serving others and laying our life down for others.
Timothy Keller speaks to the freedom and joy we experience as we allow the Word of Christ to fill us. He writes, “Gospel-humility does not need to think about myself. Not needing to connect things with myself. It is an end to thoughts such as, ‘I’m in this room with these people, does that make me look good? Do I want to be here?’ True gospel-humility means I stop connecting every experience, every conversation, with myself. In fact, I stop thinking about myself. The freedom of self-forgetfulness. The blessed rest that only self-forgetfulness brings.
