The Mighty God Who Sings Over You

Zephaniah 3:17
'The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.'

We can rejoice that God has come to dwell with His people! First in the form of a baby named Jesus and now as the Holy Spirit who dwells in the hearts of all who call upon the name of Jesus to be saved.

But notice a key phrase in that verse, “he will quiet you by his love”. It’s the image of a parent rocking a child to sleep after a nightmare. Sometimes a simple reassurance of God’s presence can calm our hearts and minds to see reality.

Anxiousness is fear over what COULD happen, but at its root, anxiousness shows a forgetful faith that is focused on a possibility rather than reality. Our brains are a wonder of creation and are capable of imagining all sorts of things. Unfortunately, it’s also easy for us to fixate on our thoughts and make them feel very, very real.

The other thing our brains are good at is forming habits. Anything we do over and over again becomes a habit. You have good habits, and you probably have some bad habits. When we let anxiety and worry run our minds unchecked, we develop the habit of anxiety and worry.

Some people can start new good habits easily, some can drop a bad habit like it’s nothing. Others can struggle, sometimes for a lifetime, and not be able to break certain habits.

Will you allow the mighty God of the universe to quiet you by his love? Like a strong father who comforts his child in their time of need, Jesus is waiting to rescue and restore a sound mind in you.

2 Timothy 1:7
'for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.'
