Most of us know what it’s like to have distance in a relationship. Nothing dramatic happened. No big argument. Just space. Time passes, nobody reaches out, and it starts to feel awkward to even try.
Paul says in Romans 5 that something very different is true for those who are in Christ. “Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” That means there is no awkward distance with God. No unresolved tension. The relationship is settled.
That peace does not come from how we feel or how well we are doing spiritually this week. It comes from what God has already said about us because of Jesus. God is not relating to you based on your recent performance, your consistency, or your failures. He relates to you based on Christ, because you are in Christ.
That is why justification matters.
It does not just mean your sins are forgiven. It means you have been placed in Christ. His obedience counts as yours. His standing before the Father is now your standing.
When we forget that, peace starts to fade. We begin measuring ourselves by growth, effort, or results. But when we remember how we were justified, peace returns and obedience follows, not out of fear, but out of freedom.
So this week, do not keep replaying your spiritual report card. Go back to the gospel. Remind yourself how you were justified. For every look at your self, take ten looks at Jesus!
Peace, joy, and good works grow when we rehearse our justification, not our résumé.
