Jesus is way more committed to you
than you are to Him.
Text: John 21:15-17
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”
Peter was headstrong, weak in the flesh, and inconsistent. But he loved Jesus.
His bold declaration, "Even if everyone runs away, I will not!” certainly haunted him. How was he to be the leader of the church when his spirit was crushed, and his reputation was so damaged? He needed restoration.
It's clear in Scripture that Peter was sorry for his failure and desired to be the leader Jesus expected him to be. But he needed to be lovingly restored to fellowship. I don't mean fellowship with God. A believer’s fellowship with God can never be broken, no matter how heinous the sin. But fellowship with the community of believers needed to be restored. And Peter needed to know that Jesus still loved him and had faith in him.
Praise God that our sins and failures do not result in Jesus abandoning us. He is way more committed to you than you could ever be to Him. How do I know that? He left His home in heaven and lived on this sin-stricken earth, dying at the hands of His creation to secure your salvation.
Do you need to be reminded of Jesus' commitment to you? As I'm writing this, the song Firm Foundation comes to mind:
I've still got joy in chaos
I've got peace that makes no sense
I won't be going under
I'm not held by my own strength
'Cause I've built my life on Jesus
He's never let me down
He's faithful in every season
So why would He fail now?
He won't!
He won't!
He won't fail!
