How the Resurrection Changes Everything

Text: John 20:11-18

"But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

When reading and studying the Bible, careful observation is extremely important. The goal in observation is to notice as much as possible. What keywords or phrases are repeated? How are things said? What does the author intend for us to catch?

The Apostle John was very intentional throughout his gospel in his choice of words and phrases. He stated his purpose for writing very clearly: To show that Jesus of Nazareth was Christ, the Son of God, and that believers in him might have eternal life (John 20:30-31).

That John wrote with a purpose should not surprise anyone. There is no such thing as a disinterested telling of history. Every historian must pick and choose what to include in his account. And this is exactly what John has done. In verse 17, Jesus refers to His disciples as "my brothers." Remember, these are the men who had run away and abandoned Him just a few days before. Nowhere before this in the gospels has Jesus referred to His disciples as "brothers." John reports this quote for a reason. It was significant! The resurrection of Jesus radically altered the position of His disciples. And Mary understood exactly who He meant by "my brothers." She wouldn't go to Jesus' biological family. She finds the eleven disciples.

Because of the cross and the resurrection, a new relationship with Jesus was made possible!

And before this, Jesus personally never used the phrases “our Father” or “our God.” He informed Mary, who would then tell the other disciples, that God was their Father also. Jesus' death and resurrection allow us to share in His sonship with the Father in a unique way never before realized.

Observation is only one facet of Bible study. We also interpret the text then we apply the text. Will you apply the truth of this passage?

  • How can you approach God in prayer as His child?
  • How is your life lived differently than the world because of the resurrection?
  • Are there places you go or people you're around where you would prefer to leave Jesus at home? Talk to your Father about that feeling. Admit it to Him and ask for a greater passion for Jesus.
