I'm talking to you

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 
Text: 2 Timothy 3:14-15

"But as for you..." Paul is emphatic; he is seeking to get Timothy’s full attention! Timothy should not be intimidated by his opponents, problems, or persecution. He should ponder and pursue Paul’s teaching (which came from Jesus), his example, and the truth God has revealed to him in the Scriptures. Paul says the Scriptures are able to make one "wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."

God often has to get our attention in an emphatic way because we are prone to turn Jesus into a religious system rather than a real and personal relationship. Timothy Lane writes, "Christianity’s change process does not revolve around a system of redemption but around a person who redeems." Jesus spoke of the need to know Him when He prayed, “This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

As I mentioned in the sermon yesterday, the concept of faith in Jesus can be understood as "leaning our whole weight upon Jesus." Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28).

Are you weary and troubled? Will you “lean” on Him today?
