Water, Wine, and a Wheelbarrow

This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. John 2:11

We often think that miracles were common, everyday occurrences in the historical narrative of the Bible. But they were not. When you think about the 4000 or so years in which the Bible gives us the history of God's creation and redemptive activity, miracles are occasional at best.

In Scripture, when God was doing something big and new, His work was authenticated with miracles. The gospels of full of miracles, or signs, as John calls them in his gospel. And God's work doesn't get any bigger than Jesus! Everything surrounding the life of Jesus, from the announcement of His birth to His resurrection from the dead, was meant to manifest HIs glory and testify to His identity.

The Apostle Peter, who spent more time with Jesus than anyone during His early ministry, writes, "You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy (1 Peter 1:8).

Peter says that those who weren't there to see Jesus change water into wine or stand in awe as He calmed the wind and the sea, can love and trust this same Jesus! And we can experience inexpressible joy through a real relationship with Him.

Sure, signs and miracles we experience aren't as obvious and overwhelming as what we see in the Gospels. But Jesus' presence is clear, plain, self-evident, and apparent. He is seeking a relationship with you. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Corinthians 1:9).
