Too Terrifying a Reality to Fully Believe
“No one ever spoke like this man!”
Text: John 7:40-46
They knew the Scripture, but they did not take the time to know Jesus.
Rather than a blog this week, take some time to answer the following questions from the sermon and Biblical text.
- Who did some people think Jesus was – 7:40,41? (Think: Where else have similar questions be raised?)
- Why did some reject Jesus as Christ? What facts were they missing – 7:42?
- What condition existed among the crowd because of Jesus? What can we learn – 7:43?
- What did some want to do to Him, and what was the result – 7:44?
- What reasons did the officers give why they did not capture Jesus – 7:45,46? (Think: What does this tell us about Jesus’ teaching?)
- The people of Jesus’ day knew the Scripture, but they did not take the time to know Jesus. Practically, how can we do this today?
- What would change if we fully believed truths like Romans 12:1: I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
- What do you think about Charles Surgeon’s quote: “We are immortal until our work is done.”
- Read the Eugene Peterson quote and discuss the “Hands” application: “Jesus doesn't tell us to go out into the world and conquer it; he calls us into a yoked companionship with himself. He doesn't ask us to do anything that he doesn't promise to do with us. We are not so much sent out as invited along.”
- The HANDS: Make a list of ways you can better serve and glorify God in your present circumstances.
It's All About Jesus,
