Never Gonna Be As Big As Jesus

He who comes from heaven is above all. John 3:31b

Text: John 3:31-36

The supremacy of Jesus is easy to state, but not so easy to accept.

More fully accepting the supremacy of Jesus is ultimately a heart issue. One can miss the mark, even while knowing the truth and regularly attending church. John Piper stated in the Solid Joys podcast this morning, "It is possible to pursue God without glorifying God. If we want our quest to honor God, we must pursue Him for the joy of fellowship with Him."

The following three steps can help you move toward Jesus. The first two will require solid habits and rhythms of life centered around God. The third is about honestly answering questions of the heart. These questions were discussed in the Kgroup that center their discussion on sermon follow-up. Even if you were in one of these groups, it may be helpful for you to revisit them.

  1. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly! (Colossians 3:16). Read and memorize Scripture!
  2. Pray every day for God to be glorified in your life. Ask Him to change your heart's affections.
  3. Spend time answering the following questions, with your Bible open and your heart in a mode of prayer and reflection:
  • Why is the supremacy of Jesus easy to state but difficult to accept?
  • Many Christians are living like an iceberg, having most of their life hidden below the surface from others.
-Where are you guilty of living this way?
-What is the danger in this?
-What does being less superficial and more authentic and real look like for you (practically)?
  • Why is it important to base our faith in Jesus on who He is and not just on what He can do for us?
  • Read verse 33. What does it mean to approve or “set a seal”? How does a person set a seal that God is true?
  • Read verse 36. What is the connection between “believe” and “reject?”
  • As difficult as the doctrine is, why must we believe in God’s wrath? Leon Morris’ said, “Unless we are saved from real peril there is no meaning in salvation.” In light of Scripture, how do you feel about this statement?
  • What does the truth of the supremacy of Jesus reveal about me that needs to be corrected? And how will that correction take place in light of what He has provided for me in the person and work of Jesus?
